First of all, I just want to say that my thoughts are with everyone in Japan, Hawai'i, and the West Coast. This is such a crazy world.
I just read in the New York Times this morning that Green Day's album-turned-Broadway-musical, American Idiot, is slated to close April 24. That really kind of upsets me, because that was on my bucket list of things to do before I die. I'm inclined to think that American Idiot was the band's best effort by far (yes, I think it was better than Dookie - go ahead and call me a sellout) - I love albums that move in a linear progression to tell a story, and this one's woeful tale of disillusionment, drugs, and young love was genius. It's probably one of my favorite albums of all time, and if you haven't heard it, go listen to it right now. I'm serious. Get off this blog and go look up "St. Jimmy" or "Jesus of Suburbia" on YouTube.
But to get off my soapbox and back to the story, as part of the closing festivities, Green Day's frontman Billie Joe Armstrong will play the character Saint Jimmy in the play from April 5 until closing night. There have also been some major casting changes: lead actor John Gallagher, Jr. left for another play and was replaced by castmate Van Hughes. When Armstrong left off performing as Saint Jimmy last week, AFI's Davey Havok took his place - which I think is still pretty cool. How many times are you going to see a rock star in a play?
Anyway, after the close of its Broadway stint, American Idiot is going on a national tour. So now I don't have to pony up the dough to go to New York to see the play. Click here for the full Times article.
