Best Albums of the 90s

Rolling Stone asked its readers to name the best albums of the 90s, and here's what they said: Number one is Nirvana's Nevermind (the naked baby album). I think that it is very definitely the album that introduced grunge, that angsty, grinding melancholy, to the world, with songs like the iconic "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Lithium", and "Something in the Way". It's going to appear on any 90s list and I wasn't surprised that it topped off this one.
I was surprised, however, that Facelift by Alice in Chains wasn't included, just for "Man in the Box" alone. In fact, Ten by Pearl Jam was the only other album by a grunge band. The last album on the list was Guns n' Roses' "Use Your Illusion 1 and 2."
The only band to make the list twice was The Smashing Pumpkins, which I think is deserved. Although their new album, Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, is an experiment in psychedelic weirdness (but don't take my word for it, it's available for free download on their website, www.smashingpumpkins.com), they remain one of my favorite bands of that era. I was surprised that Siamese Dream was sixth on the list, ahead of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, which came in ninth. In my opinion, Mellon Collie is their best album, with such gems as "Zero" (they performed it on The Simpsons!), "1979", "Bullet with Butterfly Wings", and "In the Arms of Sleep". And hey, even though frontman Billy Corgan chased away the rest of his band by overdubbing their work, at least Dave Navarro joined as guitarist for the tour. (Which reminds me, no Jane's Addiction albums. Ritual de lo Habitual should have been on there, people). So with all of this in mind, you can check out the article and videos from each of the albums here. As for me, I'm going to post my top ten favorite videos from the nineties starting today, one each day. Watch for em.
